The view from Walker Street

This is the view today from outside no. 8 Walker Street in Eastwood, where Lawrence lived for the critical years of boyhood and adolescence. The ash tree which creaked in the wind and frightened the youg boy has gone, as have the smouldering slag heaps and colliery winding gear. But the distant view of the Derbyshire hills remains, a view which held the promise of a wider world, a world which Lawrence was anxious to enter.
